VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - We think our volunteers and clients are the best, so we want to share them with you! This week, we are highlighting volunteer Lee Newman, an entrepreneur with over 40 years of experience.
Q: What is your background and why did you get involved with SCORE?
A: I operated my own business for over 40 years. I’ve been in real estate, construction and retail. Overall, I’ve started about a dozen new businesses. While I was working, I didn’t have time to give back. I sold my business about two and a half years ago and started volunteering for SCORE shortly after. I enjoy helping others become successful.
Q: What is your favorite part about volunteering for SCORE? A: Last year, I asked a few questions to a client and she took some time to think about them. I received an email a couple of days ago that she developed another idea that’s become successful and wants help. One of my favorite parts is helping young people look at their ideas properly and hopefully having them come back for more advise.
Q: Why should others sign up to volunteer for SCORE? A: If you’re successful and you want to see other people do well, you should sign up for SCORE. It’s a great way to pass on knowledge and experiences.
Q: What do you think the value is in SCORE? A: If I knew about SCORE all of those years that I ran a business, I could have done things more quickly and gained a lot of experience through a mentor.
Q: Anything else you would like to add? A: There is a wealth of knowledge to attain at SCORE. A lot of people have great ideas but they don’t have the self motivation to go do it. By connecting with a SCORE mentor, you can get pushed to be successful.
